What is Shell Cordovan leather?
Shell Cordovan is the dense layer of connective tissue found beneath the hide of a horse's hindquarters. Horween® tans it in Chicago through a long vegetable tanning process, then shaves, hot-stuffs, and hand-glazes each shell. Learn about Horween® leather and how the tannages compare.
Why do Shell Cordovan wallets cost more?
A single horsehide yields only two shells, and the tanning runs months rather than weeks. Supply is limited and every shell is finished by hand, so we build Shell Cordovan wallets in small runs.
Does Shell Cordovan crease?
It rolls instead of creasing. Where calfskin develops fine cracked lines at a fold, Shell Cordovan forms soft ripples, and the surface picks up more luster the more it is carried.
How do I care for a Shell Cordovan wallet?
Brush it with a soft horsehair brush to bring the luster back. Condition rarely and sparingly, since the shell is already hot-stuffed during tanning and too much product dulls the finish.
Is Shell Cordovan water-resistant?
The shell is dense and handles light moisture well, which makes it water-resistant, not waterproof. Blot any water off with a dry cloth, let the wallet dry at room temperature, then brush the spot out.
What does the lifetime guarantee cover?
