How Ashland is different, in one paragraph

Ashland was started by Phil Kalas and Dan Cordova, two long-time Horween® tannery workers. Every wallet is cut and built in our Chicago workshop from Horween® leather tanned about six-tenths of a mile away. That is the whole supply chain in one city. We use Horween® Shell Cordovan, the equine leather Horween® vegetable-tans for about six months, plus full grain Horween® Dublin, Cypress and Latigo, and Horween® Chromexcel®. Everything we make is Guaranteed for Life: if it rips or the stitching comes undone, we repair or replace it.

Ashland Leather vs Bellroy

Bellroy is an Australian design company. Its wallets are made by partner makers in China, India and the Philippines from leather sourced from Leather Working Group gold-rated tanneries. The Hide & Seek and Note Sleeve were $95 on Oct 11, 2026, with a 3-year warranty, and the Hide & Seek comes in two heights to fit different currencies.

Choose Ashland if you want Horween® leather or shell cordovan, a wallet made in the USA by the people who know the tannery, and coverage for life rather than three years. Choose Bellroy if you want the slimmest possible wallet with clever pockets, RFID options, lots of colors, or a price under $100.

Ashland Leather vs Popov Leather

Popov makes its goods in Nelson, British Columbia. Its Traditional Bifold is cut and saddle-stitched by hand from combination-tanned cowhide supplied by Seidel Tanning in Milwaukee. It listed at $169 on Oct 11, 2026, with a lifetime warranty and 90-day returns. Popov pays shipping on warranty repairs.

Choose Ashland if you want Horween® leathers (including shell cordovan, Dublin and Chromexcel®), a USA-made wallet, and a wider range of layouts from card holders to the Fat Herbie. Choose Popov if you want hand saddle-stitching as standard at a lower price, a Canadian-made product, or free shipping on warranty repairs.

Ashland Leather vs Tanner Goods

Tanner Goods began making belts in Portland, Oregon. Its Utility Bifold is 3.5 oz natural tooling leather, made in the USA, at $145. Its "Limited Lifetime Warranty" covers leather goods for up to 8 years, and returns are accepted within 40 days of shipment.

Choose Ashland if you want Horween® leather, shell cordovan as an option, and a guarantee that isn't capped at a set number of years. Choose Tanner Goods if you like a lighter, simple vegetable-tanned bifold, want monogramming, or shop their stores in person.

Ashland Leather vs Corter Leather & Cloth

Corter is a small shop on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where goods are punched and sewn by hand. Its Classic Bifold is $98.99 in Hermann Oak vegetable-tanned leather or Wickett & Craig harness leather, guaranteed for life. All sales are final.

Choose Ashland if you want Horween® leathers across the range, a 90-day return window, and more layouts and capacities. Choose Corter if you want a hand-sewn wallet under $100 from a one-maker shop and you're sure of your pick (no returns).

Ashland Leather vs Saddleback Leather

Saddleback is based in Texas and makes its goods at its own factory in central Mexico. The Medium Bifold is $89, in thick cowhide with a pigskin lining and an RFID-blocking layer, and carries a 100-year warranty on defects (normal wear and tear isn't covered). Returns are accepted within 30 days.

Choose Ashland if you want Horween® leather and shell cordovan, made in the USA, and a slimmer, dress-friendly profile. Choose Saddleback if you want the longest written warranty, a rugged look, built-in RFID blocking, and the lowest price here.

Ashland Leather vs Shinola

Shinola is a Detroit brand. Forbes Vetted named its Slim Bifold "Best Men's Wallet Overall" in May 2026 and described it as Horween® leather. Shinola's own product page lists vachetta, vegetable-tanned aniline leather, six faille-lined card pockets and RFID protection, at $225 (sold out on Oct 11, 2026). Shinola leather goods carry a 1-year warranty.

Choose Ashland if you want a Horween® bifold for less ($145 in Dublin), shell cordovan options, and a guarantee for life instead of one year. Choose Shinola if you want an ultra-slim lined bifold with RFID, or you like matching it with other Shinola pieces.

Where Ashland costs more, and where it doesn't

  • Shell cordovan costs more. Our all-shell Johnny the Fox is $425. If you're not sure shell is for you, read Is Shell Cordovan Worth It? before you buy.
  • Our Horween® Dublin bifold is $145. That's the same as Tanner Goods, less than Popov's listed price, and less than Shinola.
  • Returns: 90-day returns, customer pays return shipping. Popov offers 90 days, Saddleback 30, Tanner Goods 40, and Corter sales are final.
  • Hand stitching is an option at Ashland, not the default. Popov and Corter sew by hand as standard.

FAQ

Is Ashland Leather better than Bellroy?

They're built for different buyers. Ashland makes wallets in Chicago from Horween® leather, including shell cordovan, Guaranteed for Life, from $145. Bellroy makes slim, feature-driven wallets in China, India and the Philippines for $95 with a 3-year warranty. If American-made and Horween® leather matter, choose Ashland. If slimness and price matter most, Bellroy is a good fit.

Which wallet brands use Horween® leather?

Every Ashland wallet is Horween® leather. Of the other brands here, Corter uses Horween® Chromexcel® and shell cordovan on some products, and Forbes described Shinola's Slim Bifold as Horween®, though Shinola's product page doesn't name the tannery. Popov's bifold uses Seidel Tanning leather. Bellroy, Tanner Goods and Saddleback don't name Horween® for the wallets compared here.

Which brand has the best wallet warranty?

On paper, Saddleback's 100-year warranty on defects is the longest. Ashland (Guaranteed for Life), Popov and Corter all cover their goods for life. Tanner Goods covers leather goods for up to 8 years, Bellroy for 3 years, and Shinola for 1 year.

Where are Ashland Leather wallets made?

In our Chicago workshop. The leather is tanned by Horween® Leather Company, also in Chicago, about six-tenths of a mile away.

Why does Ashland cost more than Saddleback or Corter?

Our Dublin bifold is $145 and our shell cordovan pieces run higher because Horween® Shell Cordovan comes from a small part of the horsehide and takes about six months to tan. If you want a rugged wallet at the lowest price, Saddleback's $89 Medium Bifold is a fair choice. If you want Horween® leather made in Chicago, that's what the difference pays for.

What's Ashland's return policy?

90-day returns, customer pays return shipping. Personalized items can't be returned. Questions? Email Matt at info@ashlandleather.com.
